“The BBC iPlayer brand speaks for itself: one of the four pillars around which our digital portfolio is built. iPlayer is one of the biggest streaming destinations on the UK internet and vital to the BBC’s future. Our goal is to provide an exceptional online product experience across a wide variety of platforms: from big screens in the living room, through mobile apps, to the web”. BBC Mobile Applications Software Engineering is an integral part of delivering on our strategy, for a Digital-first BBC, which creates distinctive, world-class content and services.

We are self-organising and highly collaborative teams of engineers, testers, UX designers, technical architects, and product owners. We take the time to reflect and improve on how we’re working via team retrospectives and mentoring. We’re hard-working, supportive, care about each other, and promote a healthy work-life balance with opportunities for flexible working hours, in a friendly and inclusive working environment.

The iPlayer mobile teams navigate the fragmented yet massively popular iOS and Android ecosystems to deliver iPlayer on the widest possible range of devices. The teams are primarily frontend-focussed, leveraging native mobile languages (Kotlin and Swift) in their development practice to add or refine functionality on iOS and Android, and to shape their automation practice. They follow an agile methodology shipping incrementally and often. The team ensures the testing is robust, that the pipelines are steadfast and monitor their systems and products in production to understand the impact of change every time they release value to our audiences. An intuitive and engaging product experience is integral to the audience’s enjoyment of the rich content that we offer and the sense of value that they get from the BBC.
