About This Role

Responsibility for implementing and delivering hardware security penetration testing assignments. Hardware hacking, operating system analysis, firmware analysis, network protocol assessment, and physical security device examination. Electronic vulnerability analysis of systems/applications and source code auditing, black box testing and reverse engineering of closed source components, development of penetration testing software.

Due to the sensitive nature of this role you may be required to undergo DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance ( An allowance of £5k per annum may be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role

You’ll Have The Following Responsibilities

  • Understand & manage customer expectations adopting pre-assessment processes
  • Successfully progress all documented pre-test planning processes
  • Completion of all hardware hacking tasks within scope agreed with team leader
  • Ensure hardware assessment completion within the agreed test window
  • Regular feedback of events and test status to team leader and senior management
  • Ensure all customer data is secured pre-test, in-situ & post assessment
  • Compile test data, compose and then deliver test report within agreed timescales
  • Deliver end of test debrief to customer, when requested
  • Provide effort to ensure QA methodology is applied to test reports to meet agreed delivery dates
  • Provide effort to ensure QA methodology is applied to the team process documentation
  • Ensure post-test archive of all test data adopting team processes
  • Management of small-medium tasks and teams
  • Provides consultancy to BT Lines of business regarding risks identified through testing and the most cost-effective methods of mitigating threats

Prerequisites of the role:

  • Candidates will have experience and knowledge in hacking hardware, with good understanding about common internet-of-things software practices. Specializing in the areas of software vulnerability analysis and penetration testing.
  • Successful applicants will also hold skills in the following capabilities, or have the technical skill-set and experience required to ensure that they will be capable of quickly achieving that level through self-directed research, mentoring and on-the-job training.
  • Additionally, they will also be able to utilize these skills within an incident response capability and advise senior management on both the technical and commercial impact thereof.

Hardware hacking:

  • Has the ability to find and interact with interfaces on hardware systems like serial ports, JTAG, I²C, and SPI.
  • Knowledge of common test equipment such as logic analysers, oscilloscopes.
  • Understanding of common firmware formats, compression mechanisms, and filesystems.
  • Ability to write tools to interact and interwork with common hardware
  • Analysis of embedded operating systems and software
  • Extracting binary images from firmware
  • Ability to reverse engineer binary code
  • Wireless network security analysis
  • Finding exploits in binary code
  • Examination of proprietary network protocols

Application Security Testing – web, database:

  • Has the ability to evaluate the security of web or database applications and underlying technologies. Experience with assessing the security of web and database servers e.g. Apache, MySQL, PHP, JSP, and other web technologies.
  • Understanding of traditional technologies and identification of common and unique web vulnerabilities. SQL Injection, XSS, CSRF etc
  • Understanding and experience of a wide range of application security testing tools and techniques
  • Experience of writing web application security testing and exploitation scripts and tools
