Waste and Recycling Community Engagement Officer – East

Cornwall Council’s waste team provides high profile collection, cleansing and disposal services to the residents of Cornwall. The services that the team provide are delivered through large contracts, are used by all residents and visitors, and are delivered to a consistently high standard. Now is a really exciting time to be a part of our friendly, motivated and high performing team. We are embarking on a series of significant changes to the services that are provided to deliver the objectives of our resources and waste strategy and climate change commitments.

A vacancy has become available within Cornwall Councils Waste and Recycling Community Engagement Team. The team are responsible for helping the people of Cornwall waste less and recycle more.

The successful candidate will be a champion for waste reduction, re-use and recycling in Cornwall, working with all sectors of the community including Town and Parish Councils, community networks, schools, members of the public and businesses. You will also work closely with colleagues in our waste collection and disposal contracts and other Cornwall Council services.

You will assist with the delivery of Cornwall’s Waste & Resources Strategy to individuals and groups to improve community capacity in waste management behaviours, promoting education, awareness and positive action on the issues around waste prevention, reuse and recycling. You will also promote the Keep Cornwall Clean litter reduction campaign.
Mainly based in the East of the County you will attend events in person and virtually. You will work closely with the rest of the Community Engagement Team on joint activities, but will also be expected to complete individual projects alone.

This role calls for flexibility as some evening and weekend will be required.

An understanding of Cornwall’s waste management service is needed, but what is essential is that you are passionate about protecting the environment and are an advocate of waste reduction and resource efficiency.

You will need to be an excellent communicator both verbally and in writing, answering queries and questions electronically and face to face. You will also help and support the rest of the waste management team. To deliver the aims and objectives for the service, ensuring they are aligned to the wider vision and priorities for Cornwall, articulated and delivered through the relevant Service and Council Plans.
