This appointment is for a Consultant Obstetrician and gynaecologist with an interest in Colposcopy and urogynaecology to complement the needs of the department. . The applicant should have the appropriate training and experience to fulfil the requirements of this post and be on the Specialist Register or entry expected within 6 months of interview date.

This appointment offers exciting opportunities in light of the major changes currently taking place in the Obstetric, Gynaecology and Sexual Health Directorate within the Trust. In 2010, completion of the new Women and Newborn Centre in Burnley saw all hospital based obstetric deliveries on one site with three Birth centres covering 6,500 deliveries per annum.

The appointee will join 20 other Substantive Consultants at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The post will be based at Burnley General Hospital, although this may be subject to change. The post can be filled on a part time basis.

  • Provide and develop further, with Clinical Colleagues, Obstetric and Gynaecological services for the Trust and to collaborate with colleagues in all disciplines including primary and tertiary care, where appropriate, to achieve an integrated service for patients.
  • Develop such special skills and interests appropriate to the agreed overall development of the department, in particular undergraduate and postgraduate education.
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit. This will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
  • Ensure own practice is up-to-date. This will include taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance Review.
  • Operate a system of cover for annual, study and professional leave with the current Consultants in post.
  • Deputise for absent colleagues, as far as is practicable.
  • Foster effective working relationships between various members of the Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Sexual Health Directorate and wider Division, including Managerial, Midwifery, Nurse, Professional, Secretarial and Technical staff.
  • Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council.
  • Consultants will not be on duty for the labour ward whilst being timetabled for other clinical duties, such as antenatal or gynaecology clinics.

The Division of Family Care is based at the Burnley General Hospital Site and comprises Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Children’s Services including Neonatology and CAMHS and Sexual Health Services under one management group. The unit has national accreditation as endometriosis and urogynaecology centres.

The Division provides these services across sites, managing a combined budget of £32m and 931 staff (WTE 781.6) across all disciplines.

The Division is headed by the Associate Medical Director, supported by the Divisional General Manager who represent the Division on the Senior Management Board and who together have responsibility for formulating the Division’s strategic development and operational management together with the budget, governance, risk management and assurance.
