About the job


The newly formed Academic Departments at Central require a Head of Department to lead academic activity. This exciting new opportunity will provide operational, tactical, and strategic leadership of the programmes and staff within the department ensuring clear and coherent planning and delivery of our core academic portfolio.

You will be a member of the Senior Management Group and lead the department in providing a high-quality student experience, supporting staff development, including target-setting and appraisal, and enabling the curriculum and learning, teaching and assessment, scholarship and research are of the highest quality.

You will support staff research, scholarship, and knowledge exchange activity, in coordination and collaboration with the two Vice-Principals: Curriculum and Students and Research & Knowledge Exchange. In addition to having responsibility for appropriately staffing and resourcing programmes from a devolved operational budget.

The three academic departments, we welcome applications for are:

Department of Performance

The Department of Performance comprises our Acting, Music Theatre and performance teaching and coaching programmes. Our students go on to success on stage and screen and in the world of professional performance training. Programmes in the department include:

  • BA Acting
  • BA Collaborative and Devised Theatre
  • BA Musical Theatre MA Acting (Classical)
  • MA Acting (Contemporary)
  • MA Acting for Screen
  • MA Music Theatre MA/MFA Actor Training & Coaching
  • MA/MFA Movement Directing & Teaching
  • MA/MFA Voice Studies; Teaching & Coaching

Department of Practice

The Department of Practice comprises our applied, experimental and writing programmes, alongside our professionally accredited Drama & Movement Therapy programme. Our students go on to success in social, cultural and educational contexts, across the performing arts, wider cultural industries and third sector. Programmes in the department include:

  • BA Drama, Applied Theatre & Education
  • BA Experimental Arts & Performance
  • BA Writing for Performance
  • MA Applied Theatre
  • MA/MFA Advanced Theatre Practice
  • MA Drama & Movement Therapy
  • MA Writing for Stage & Broadcast Media

Department of Producing

The Department of Producing comprises our creative production arts courses. Our students go on to success in many areas of the stage and screen industries, producing cutting-edge creative material and outputs. Programmes in the department include:

  • BA Costume Construction
  • BA Design for Performance
  • BA Lighting Design
  • BA Production Lighting
  • BA Prop Making
  • BA Scenic Painting for Stage & Screen
  • BA Set Construction for Stage & Screen
  • BA Sound Design & Production
  • BA Stage Management & Technical Theatre
  • MA/MFA Creative Producing
  • MA/MFA Scenography
