Kirklees Council are advertising this role on behalf of West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) is looking to recruit and train Contingency Fire Crews to provide ongoing support when required.

Contingency Fire Crews provide emergency response support in the event of exceptional demands on our service or to cover for periods of industrial action.

There is a legal duty placed upon the Fire Authority to provide emergency cover to the public they serve, and this is done within West Yorkshire via our Contingency Fire Crews.

There will be no average day for a member of our Contingency Fire Crew. You could be attending a fire or a road traffic collision; helping to save lives and providing emergency operational support to the West Yorkshire community.

There may be a requirement to work multiple consecutive shifts, therefore a Contingency Fire Crew member could work for 24 hours or more.

There are two main roles within our Contingency Fire Crews. These are:

Contingency Fire Crew

Crews will be required to staff fire appliances and attend emergency incidents. Training will be provided.

You will be required to be medically fit and candidates are required to be of a good level of physical fitness which will be assessed during the recruitment process.

Contingency Driver/Pump Operators

These individuals will be required to drive fire appliances to emergency incidents and operate the pumps to provide water to the crew. Training will be provided but individuals undertaking these roles will need significant prior experience and licenses for driving large goods vehicles. Basic medical tests are also required for this role.

You will be contracted to work only when required by the organisation. There will be no guarantee of future work – this is called a zero hours contract.

To be successful, you are required to:

  • Complete and return the application form to [email protected].
  • Pass parts of the National Fitness Selection Tests – which may include working within confined spaces, a manual dexterity test and being able to work at height.
  • Undertake an interview.
  • Undergo medical examinations to ensure you are suitable to undertake demanding firefighting duties.
  • Successful applicants are required to undertake a basic disclosure check (via the Disclosure and Barring Service – DBS) and provide references.

Training: There will be a requirement for attendance at a paid two-three week (Mon-Fri 0900-1700). Training Course starting either 24th or 31st October 2023 for Contingency Crew whilst Drivers will require a one week training course starting on 24 October.
