Job Summary

DESCRIPTION

Amazon’s Item Safety team protects customer trust, and Amazon’s brand reputation, by delivering a solution that prevents the promotion of products that could offend, upset or reveal secrets about our customers. We optimize first and foremost for safety (precision), and strive to maximise selection (scale). We delight in data, and are constantly trying to enrich our models. We relentlessly optimize to enable the best possible experience for our customers and advertisers alike. We are end to end owners and innovators; we own datasets, Machine Learning models, APIs and UI’s. The heart of our mechanism utilizes machine learning to deliver scale and safely handle the variety, nuance and noise of Amazon’s vast catalog.

Successful candidates will have an understanding of stable, scalable systems that have been successfully deployed in a business setting. You will be passionate about technology with a focus on the customer experience, great teamwork and communication skills and a motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced environment.

You will work as part of one of our small Agile teams, launching and growing new initiatives for Amazon’s global business. As an engineer, you can be involved in every aspect of the process – from idea generation, business analysis and technical design through to development and deployment across a variety of technologies – giving you a real sense of ownership. Together we build systems which meet high standards of performance and reliability and operate at massive scale.

Amazon is a place where builders can build. We are looking for engineers who can delight customers by continually learning and inventing. From day one, you will be working with experienced engineers, designers and applied scientists who love what they do.

  • Demonstrated coding skills in a language such as Java, Python, Ruby, C++ or C#
  • Knowledge of computer science fundamentals including a broad range of algorithms and data-structures.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching others.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating and maintaining production software.
  • Advanced coding skills (concurrency, profiling and performance optimization).
  • Designed and built complex systems (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling).
  • Basic familiarity with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React).
  • Linux/UNIX (command-line tools, shell scripts, operations).
  • Experience in data manipulation and analysis.
  • Experience of machine learning techniques.

Personal Qualities

  • Results oriented and analytical, with a customer and business focus.
  • Ability to communicate and discuss technical topics with both technical and business audiences.
  • Highly innovative, self-directed and able to deal well with ambiguous problems.
  • Strong sense of ownership, with a passion for software and continuous learning.
