Amazon is searching for a solutions-oriented Project Engineer to be a part of our Operations Engineering team and contribute to the global initiative of delivering the next generation of high-quality sortation systems. Ideal candidates are natural self-starters who have prior engineering experience in the integrated automation project life cycle, including development, design, implementation, enhancement, and support. This candidate ideally has directly handled the execution of large capital automation projects with a cumulative spend of greater than $15MM and aggressive schedule commitments.

Our Project Engineers should be agile with the ability to quickly adapt strategies, plans and solutions in response to dynamic business requirements. They should be comfortable interfacing and coordinating various functional teams and team members at all levels of the organization in different locations. Open minds, customer focus, excellent communication skills, personal motivation, and occasional senses of humor enable our Operations Engineering team to deliver the most advanced sortation solutions in the world.

Key job responsibilities

  • Manage integrated automation end-to-end projects, from contract award to operational final acceptance, with system elements such as high-speed sortation, conveyor lines and tippers.
  • Manage the material handling scope of sort centre projects and coordinate with internal AMZ stakeholders as part of an integrated project team.
  • Manage material handling equipment vendor on site during mechanical and electrical installation and accurately report progress to Amazon business.
  • Review technical offers including scope of supply, planning assessment, exclusions and risks.
  • Develop and handle budget and contract documents including RFPs, change order controls, purchase orders, and invoicing.
  • Monitor and report progress and deviations and risk of vendor supply chain.
  • Monitor and enforce project schedules and quality with vendors or subcontractors.
  • Coordinate on-site vendors and escalate issues through vendor and Amazon leadership during the project execution phase.
  • Inspect equipment and produce punchlists to Amazon installation standards and specifications.
  • Understand and ensure machinery compliance against relevant country specifications and EU legislation.
  • Coordinate system commissioning and predefined testing activities, including administering the plan, interpreting data and reporting results.
  • Coordinate with local site operations and maintenance teams to ensure proper training, procedural compliance, maintenance and safety practices for new and existing equipment.
  • Thoroughly investigate and document project change requests and provide recommendations.
  • Build effective working relationships with sort center leadership and their operations teams across multiple sites as well as their business stakeholders such as Launch, Facilities, Finance, Safety and Process Engineers.
  • Identify and coordinate process improvement initiatives in support of operations teams within the node.
  • Perform and direct deep dives of the performance of complex material handling equipment and work with vendors to provide quality solutions.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other STEM field.
  • Experience as a project engineer, process engineer, project manager, manufacturing engineer, or related occupation.
  • Proven technical leadership for large-scale industrial engineering projects (greater than $15MM).
  • Design and/or implementation experience with integrated automation solutions, such as material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, or manufacturing lines.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products: Excel, Project and Outlook.
  • Familiar with navigation on 3D cad models.
  • Ability to travel up to 60% of time to installation sites throughout Europe.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Operations, Business Administration, or a related STEM field.
  • Demonstrate proven design experience of Material handling experience and or manufacturing.
  • Exposure to Six Sigma, Lean manufacturing efforts, transportation/logistics and/or fulfillment/distribution centers.
  • Direct management or responsibility for material handling, automation, or technical projects.
  • Proven technical leadership for industrial engineering projects or programs.
  • Experience in Failure Mode and Effective Analysis of systems and processes.
