We are currently looking for a Principal Engineer to join our Index and Compute team in Cambridge, UK, to lead engineering in filesystem and database technology. This engineer will lead and collaborate in multiple open source initiatives.

Key job responsibilities

Principal Engineers are fundamentally passionate about designing scalable and resilient services, innovating and supporting new product architectures and business models.

You’ll think globally when building systems, ensuring we build high performing, scalable systems that fit well together. We are looking for pragmatic visionaries who can translate business needs into workable technology solutions. Your expertise is deep and broad; you’re hands on, producing both detailed technical work and high-level architectural designs.

As a Principal Engineer on our team, you will work with leaders across Amazon S3 to define our business and technical vision. You will balance technical leadership and savvy with strong business judgment to make the right decisions about technology choices. You will own the architecture, share your updates with leadership, get buy-in, and work with stakeholder across multiple teams to maintain industry leadership.

You will be working on Amazon S3’s most strategic and mission critical products. This is an opportunity to work on the latest industry trends and shape the way how customers use S3. It is quite literally Day One for this product where you get the opportunity to work with S3’s largest and most technical customers to define and drive the next product launch and beyond.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record of leading large-scale, high-quality systems.
  • Deep hands-on technical expertise in at least one major technical area: filesystems or databases
  • Exemplary hands-on practitioner and lead by example in creating prototypes, demonstrating working systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Great at working with the senior leadership within your organization to develop a long-term technical strategy. You map business goals to appropriate technology investments.
  • Experience mentoring/training an engineering community on complex technical issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or related field
  • 15+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong performance engineering fundamentals with C++ or Rust
  • Familiarity with formal verification methods for software quality
  • Experience collaborating in open source projects
  • Multiple years of interacting regularly and directly with senior executives and distinguished engineers
  • Ability to thrive in a startup-like environment
