Job Introduction

The Factual Entertainment & Events division produces many flagship programmes, including BBC’s Watchdog and the daytime success, Morning Live. With its new home in Manchester, they are looking for talented producers with experience of Studio, Gallery or Live to join the Talent Pool.

Successful candidates will preferably have a background in journalism and/or consumer/ topical television programmes. Good research skills, editorial judgement and ability to deal with TALENT and PRESENTERSare essential. Our studio producer roles offer the potential to work in a fast paced live studio creating compelling, topical and entertaining shows that speak to our audience.

Joining the pool will mean that you will be offered work as and when opportunities arise. Appointment to the pool will not entitle candidates to permanent contracts with the BBC, those will have to be applied for in the normal way. The Talent Pool serves as a database of producers who have the necessary skills and experience to work with us and forms a group of candidates that will be considered as a priority should a short-term (non-permanent) position become vacant.

Role Responsibility

  • To support the Editor and Series Producer in delivering to an audience on TV and digital platforms, including involvement in strategic editorial planning for the brand.
  • To provide the creative drive and direction for the production team, initiating and shaping items for high profile guests and features, which unlock factual entertainment subjects in a visual and impactful way for the audience. This involves running ideas meetings, supporting team members with developing ideas and honing studio scripts.
  • To produce in studio which involves running the gallery with the studio director during rehearsals and pre-recorded or live output, to schedule the studio day and liaise with lighting, sound, art director and studio resource manager to convey the technical and design requirements for each show.
  • To develop and nurture the presenters, giving regular feedback and enable them to perform to the best of their abilities in the studio.
  • To lead and motivate the production team providing a strong sense of direction and a supportive environment in which to work. This includes ensuring the team has clear and realistic objectives, providing clear briefings, monitoring performance, setting up effective mentoring, providing constructive feedback and leading by example.
  • To complete Risk Assessments and be aware of safety responsibilities and actively seek information and participate in appropriate training. To provide appropriate information and suitable training to other staff.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Strong and extensive producing experience on live entertainment, daytime, event TV or factual shows and/or magazine formats, with studio gallery producing experience a must.
  • Creative and highly imaginative with original ideas and a track record of turning these into reality blending film, studio and interactive content together.
  • Clear and decisive decision-making / strong editorial judgement in a live and sometimes pressurised studio / gallery environment.
  • Excellent script writing / editing skills.
  • Experience of developing and working with presenters.
  • Excellent experience of leading and managing teams, particularly on long-running productions or ongoing areas, with a strong track record in delivering feedback and developing people’s experience and skills.
  • To be able to demonstrate a real understanding of the Morning Live audience, be up to date with current events, highly knowledgeable about the changing broadcast environment and know about new trends in delivering content to this audience
  • Knowledge of relevant editorial guidelines and awareness of BBC and statutory policies and regulations; e.g. producer guidelines, artists’ rights, copyright, music copyright, insurance requirements, working with the public etc.
  • A track record of collaborating with interactive teams to develop and deliver content ideas that can grow reach and engagement on our digital platforms.
