BBC Jobs – Senior Software Engineer

About the job

Job Introduction

Millions of users rely on the BBC to deliver great TV and radio whenever and wherever they need it. But have you ever thought about how that content gets to your browser or app? Preparing, transcoding, packaging and delivering video and audio is a complex process, and it’s what we do in BBC Media Services.

Role Responsibility

We are looking for a methodical and pragmatic Senior Software Engineer in Test to join one of our Agile squads. This is your chance to develop your testing career with a globally respected media organisation, build your skills in AWS cloud technologies, and help ensure a smooth and reliable streaming experience as users do more and more of their listening and viewing online.

You’ll be working entirely with back-end software: mostly that means Java microservices that chain together using queues and topics to provide AV processing workflows. The Test Team is embarking on a programme of renewal and retooling, so alongside testing new features and improvements we’ll rely on you to contribute to new automation frameworks and migrate or decommission existing tests.

Are you the right candidate?

We’re looking for an all-rounder. As well as being an experienced coder (any language is relevant), you’ll be comfortable planning testing activities and able to share and delegate work. Your focus will be on functional testing, but you may need to contribute to load, performance and security tests, so awareness of those disciplines is an advantage. Crucially, you’ll also have the knack of mentoring colleagues and helping them do their best work.

You don’t need to understand AV streaming technologies — we’ll train you on the job — but we need someone who’s eager to roll up their sleeves and learn about how our ecosystem works under the bonnet.
