Job Description

The Net Zero Buildings & Industry Group is responsible for driving the decarbonisation of the buildings and industry sectors, providing support for consumers and business, certainty for investors, and transformational opportunity for former industrial heartlands. We are responsible, amongst other things, for policy on energy efficiency, low carbon heat technologies, fuel poverty, emissions trading and growing the hydrogen economy.

You will provide support to the Director General (DG) and the Group. In addition to executive support, including diary and business management, you will also have the opportunity to see BEIS’ Net Zero policy and delivery in action, as well as the government’s response to the current energy crisis.

Person specification

You will work as a part of small office (three-person team) to support the DG and leadership team, as well as colleagues across the Department.

This Will Include

  • Working within a friendly team to provide high-quality, effective Executive Assistant and diary support to the DG with a high level of attention to detail and discreet management issues.
  • Running the DG office inbox and diary, working with Directors to ensure senior meetings are delegated where necessary, communicating clearly on key issues, and commissioning actions to colleagues where required.
  • Liaison with officials and stakeholders (including Ministerial Private Office and high-level external stakeholders), communicating clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally.
  • Coordinating meetings, commissioning high-quality briefings, circulating agendas, meeting papers and notes on the meeting (as appropriate) in the timely manner.
  • Acting as an effective gatekeeper, whilst maintaining sound judgement and interpersonal skills.
  • Representing the DG’s interests effectively in dealings with other parts of BEIS, other government departments and external partners.
  • Assisting the Private Secretary with budget management of the DG’s cost centre (knowledge of finance and HR systems is desirable, although training will be provided).
  • Leading on providing administration guidance across the Group.
  • Supporting the DG and DG’s office more widely on a range of corporate workstreams.

Skills And Experience

The role is very varied and we’re looking for an enthusiastic person who can be adaptable and flexible in their approach to work, getting involved in a range of tasks to provide support, advice and a helping hand to the busy Director General and other office staff. You will work closely with others in the office, often covering work in others’ portfolios during times of challenge, providing variety and opportunities for development. We’re looking for someone who can learn fast, work at pace, communicate efficiently and prioritise effectively.
