Would you like to help create the innovations that the UK needs to achieve Net Zero and grow the green economy?

The SICE (Science and Innovation for Climate and Energy) team is delivering against the £1Bn Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP)

We are looking for an Energy Innovation Project Manager to work alongside NZIP Programme Managers developing the next generation of technical innovations within the ten technology themes within the NZIP. This role will be based within the Built Innovation Team, primarily focused on the delivery of the £60mn Heat Pump Ready Programme, in addition to broader support across the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio.

Person specification

You Will Be Responsible For

  • Developing business cases to secure support for new innovation approaches and to provide briefing for Ministers and officials;
  • Supporting the selection process to identify the most eligible and promising technologies;
  • Project and Programme management experience, including experience of establishing and managing government procurement contracts and grant programmes;
  • Collaborating closely with the BEIS appointed technical experts to verify business and technical deliverables received from projects;
  • Attending site visits and responding to ad hoc queries;
  • Maintaining project performance within the Internal Project Management software such as risks, deliverables and finances;
  • Programme evaluation and closure;
  • Working with other members of the team on the existing innovation programmes within their specific themes, additionally the successful candidate for the will have the opportunity to lead their own initiatives;
  • Partnerships – building effective relationships with key people both inside Government, and outside in industry and academia;
  • Advising, influencing and supporting policy development within BEIS.

We Are Looking For Candidates With

Desirable skills

  • Background in science and engineering, and strong focus project delivery experience;
  • Ability to engage, influence and work collaboratively with internal BEIS and external partners;
  • Confidence in handling data, quantitative and qualitative project information;
  • Familiarity with energy and climate sectors.

The post holder will also need to work flexibly and be prepared to tackle new responsibilities or support other areas of work within the team or across SICE.

The post holder should be eager to develop their existing skills on project delivery and be confident with data, quantitative and qualitative project information.

To qualify for the Science & Engineering Practitioner Allowance, the postholders will be required to:

  • Possess a valid (and registered if applicable) academic or professional qualification relevant to the role; and
  • Be able to ‘Provide technical and commercial leadership’ competence to Chartered Engineer standard, from UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) (http://www.engc.org.uk/engcdocuments/internet/Website/UK-SPEC%20third%20edition%20(1).pdf)
