Why this job matters

This crucial role provides technical expertise, delivering software and data engineering solutions that provide business value and meet customer requirements, including necessary design, documentation, automated testing, deployment and in-life support. The role leads a team transforming and operating technology platforms underpinning critical customer services.

You will lead by example for your team of engineers, who will input into your authoritative technical recommendations to commercial decisions on new and emerging areas, that balance deliverable commitments, unit strategic decisions on software engineering, and operational performance.

What you will be doing

Be the driving force for the data and software engineering teams, being the crucial interface between business, product and design. You dive deep into technical architecture, manage stakeholders, communicate towards peers and leadership and lead the engineering activities for the company.

• Own and deliver the data and software engineering technology roadmap and lead software engineering, architecture, data science and data infrastructure of the organisation

• Actively engage in sprint planning, delivery and managing the releases

• Provide hands-on technology leadership to the engineering team

• Provide expert technical guidance to all functional areas, including strategy, operations, sales, product, marketing and data science teams.

• Ensure consistent best practices, processes, and procedures for software development, quality assurance, and maintenance

• Identify risks and opportunities for the technology and data environment

• Mentor, motivate, and lead Engineering teams to support a vibrant and productive engineering culture

• Coordinate recruiting efforts across engineering units to ensure consistency and continued excellence

• Co-ordinate with Product Development team to align engineering, and business priorities

• Define, articulate, and execute engineering strategy and product delivery from launch to scale

• Constantly evaluate technological advancements and innovative solutions to drive continuous product improvement

• Gain and share insights with other leadership team members to continue improving the product and the business

• Maintain a customer focused outlook and work to deliver technology projects to market

• Ensure all technology practices adhere to regulatory standards

• Implement agile software development methodologies and best practices to deliver operating efficiency

• Ensure the availability and quality of the organisation’s primary data feeds can support the needs of the business

• Ensure compliance with BT enterprise architecture

• Responsible for building a shared data platform within Google Cloud Platform

• Liaise and collaborate with suppliers and technical solution partners to accelerate delivery of Active Intelligence objectives

• Ensure that product architecture supports the priorities of the business

• Working with stakeholders at all levels of the business to understand BT’s data needs and how that data can be exploited to provide tangible benefits and value to the business.

• Providing technical leadership and authority for solutions based on big data technology, distributed computing, hybrid-cloud platforms, machine learning and AI decision-making.

• Leading teams in designing, planning and delivering cutting-edge data projects to deliver stakeholders’ needs.

• Research new technologies in data engineering, data science, and AIOps, evaluating their applicability to our needs through trials and PoCs.

• Develop relationships with existing suppliers and BT’s strategic partners to ensure a mutual understanding of our needs, plans, delivery priorities and roadmaps.

• You will work with the team to improve how we work, the tools we use and how we share experience.

• Own high-level design, architectures, visions for software solutions which can deliver against customer requirements

Skills Required for the Job

You will have a passion for software engineering, data engineering and data science with a hands-on attitude which helps you to deliver projects, and guide and support other engineers to bring highest value to the stakeholders

  • Knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organisational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy (e.g. business KPIs, business cases)
  • Stakeholder Management: Able to develop close relationships with senior customers/vendors/suppliers to facilitate negotiations and manage major escalations.
  • Technical Knowledge: Can give comprehensive & technical specialised advice on emerging new Technologies. Provide guidance and counsel on complex and unfamiliar situations and leverages other experts to develop solutions.
  • Hold others to account: Able to demand high ethical standards and values led behaviours ensuring the same understanding in their team. Able to call out misaligned or poor behaviours
  • Be agile: Able to lead collaborative and agile ways of working through projects and programmes effectively managing changing priorities.

Data skills:

  • Skills and experience in Data Engineering and key associated technologies (ELK Stack, Kafka, MirrorMaker etc.) OR can demonstrate a track record of learning new skills and technical reinvention in your career.
  • A leader in data and software engineering.
  • Familiar with the practice of Hub and Spoke models including implementation.
  • Understanding of AI and Machine Learning in order to work with our Data Science team
  • You will be recognised as a data subject matter expert and will inform and drive debate within the team about future technical strategies.
  • Experience working in big data/ cloud computing environment – GCP is preferable.
  • Experience working on complex data sets, developing mathematical and statistical models
  • Preferable – Analytics and/or Data based certifications.
