Why this job matters

In-home networks form the final link in delivering BT’s broadband connectivity offerings. As such, their performance is critical to delivering a quality customer experience. This role is vital to the development of techniques and tools to diagnose issues within the home network and to optimise the performance of those networks to ensure an excellent customer experience.

This is a technical professional role in Applied Research where the individual will contribute to one or more research projects under supervision, applying their expertise within a clearly defined sphere of technical knowledge. The role holder actively engages with colleagues to progress new research in important technical topics and supports the realisation of business value from research and innovation outputs.

The post holder will be part of a small research team addressing the future needs of the business in in-home networking, public Wi-Fi and the integration of Wi-Fi into 5G. This role will involve working with a team of experts in Applied Research as well as stakeholders in BT’s customer facing divisions and its technology delivery units.

Specifically this role is accountable for:

1 – Contributing to novel work or clear technical recommendations leading to new solutions to business challenges and opportunities in areas supporting BT’s strategic priorities, or in new fields with potential impact on BT’s future business.

2 – Maintaining awareness of advances in thier field.

3 – Preparing reports and presentations to customers and collaborative partners

  • Contributing to journal publications, popular science articles etc. which contribute to BT’s world-class standing in telecommunications and ICT research.
  • Contributing to the creation of intellectual property rights which will enhance BT’s competitive position

Your Responsibilities

The key purpose of this role is to conduct research into how to apply data science, machine learning and modelling techniques for problem diagnosis and optimisation of in home networks, especially Wi-Fi. The role will include conducting research, developing proof-of-concept demonstrators and supporting the industrialisation of novel solutions.

  • Technical expert responsible for maintaining expertise in a specific technical domain (data science / machine learning / modelling for in home networking diagnostics and optimisation).
  • Responsible for intellectual property creation, contributing to patent filing with their team and supporting IPR exploitation where appropriate
  • Accountable for performing research in an specific domain (data science / machine learning / modelling for in home networking diagnostics and optimisation) or area that is typically unknown, complex, high impact and high value across multiple domains.
  • Responsible for authoring technical papers, capturing intellectual property
  • Responsible for developing novel research work and contributing towards recommendations for future research projects.

Essential Skills

Experience Required

  • Data Science / Machine learning / Modelling: A scientific, mathematical or engineering background with experience in big data, machine learning and/or modelling.
  • Programming: Strong software development skills using languages such as Java, C & C++.
  • Qualifications: Strong academic record in technology specialism, qualified to degree level and may hold a post-graduate qualification
  • Expert communicator: Presents to peers and managers about their research and area of technical expertise
  • Experienced in open innovation: Contributes to creation of patents, technical publications, conference presentations, standards etc.
  • Concept Evaluation: ability to spot relevant innovations, horizon scanning, determine relevance for the business, develop an effective conceptualisation and build trials to test the concept

Desirable Skills

  • In depth understanding of Wi-Fi.
  • Developer-level familiarity with Linux.
  • In-depth knowledge of network protocols and IP architectures.
  • Experience of software development for Android and iOS.
  • Working knowledge of tools and techniques for radio and network modelling / simulation, such as ns-3 and MatLab.
  • Working knowledge of data visualisation techniques/software.
  • Understanding of mathematical optimisation techniques.
  • Broad understanding of cellular networking (LTE/5G).
