About This Role

The Cloud Communication Services unit design, build and maintain the UK and Global voice communication and collaboration services for BT.

999 is the UK’s emergency assistance number. As well as answering 30 million 999 calls each year, BT have a responsibility to ensure that it is always available, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This role is a key part of our third-line operational support team who maintain critical voice services including 999.

SRE combines technical development and IT operations. We take applications and services through to live, breaking down silos and blurring the lines between traditional operations and development teams. This speeds up – and automates – the development pipeline. SRE don’t do mundane, repetitive tasks; using scripting skills, our engineers automate the repetitive, build new infrastructure and test code written by others.

The role holder will be responsible for ensuring system uptime in accordance with SLAs by building automation solutions which can be used in operations, maintenance and incident scenarios, whilst working alongside developers to create new features, remove bugs and add value.

This role is part of a 24×7 operational team which will require entry into a callout rota of 1 in 4.

The role sits within the Voice Services and Applications Development team in Technology (Networks) and is based on design and development of voice applications. This involves the introduction of new applications, development of software services/solutions, and integrating third party vendors’ products.

You’ll Have The Following Responsibilities

  • Using full ITIL framework along with internal and external expertise to identify and resolve complex issues, ensuring the best application performance and customer experience.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of platform technology upgrades.
  • Taking services to live; acting as quality gate check for the applications.
  • Configuring, developing and automating our ticketing system, monitoring alarms and data feeds to deliver data driven monitoring and decision making.
  • Providing support to 1st and 2nd line technical teams, whilst interacting with developers and other stakeholders to resolve complex issues and prevent reoccurrence.
  • Using scripting skills to automate regular and repetitive tasks to streamline our processes and operational experience.

Essential

You’ll have the following skills & experience

  • Involved in deploy/manage/operate of medium to large scale production systems
  • Experience working as a Site Reliability Engineer
  • Experience of infrastructure configuration management automation e.g. Ansible/Terraform/Puppet/Chef
  • Experience of setting up component logging and configuring monitoring tools – e.g. Prometheus
  • Linux administration and automation
  • Experience of working with database technologies RDBMS and NoSQL technologies
  • Software debugging and tuning experience
  • Desirable
  • Computing related degree or equivalent experience
  • Telephony/SIP application development
  • Experience in developing scripting, e.g. Python
  • Experience working with REST APIs
