About this role:

Data is a vital part of our business and with your help, we can improve the services that we provide to our customers through engineering excellence of our data products. You’ll be working on exciting data products which support TV, BT Sport, Broadband, Digital Voice and market leading technologies like Unbreakable Wifi. We deliver these critical services using the latest cloud technologies on AWS and GCP.

When you join us as a software engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to be part of our Data Enablement Team where you will help to design and build high quality engineering products from our extensive data sources and multi-cloud environment.

You’ll have the following responsibilities:

  • Design and build scalable data products for our business stakeholders.
  • Agile development through story planning, estimation and retrospectives
  • Provide engineering leadership and contribute to our strategic data platform architecture, engineering community and standards.
  • Continual improvement mind-set i.e. innovation / process improvements / automation opportunities / security standards.
  • Collaborate with architects, designers, analysts, product specialists, and other software engineers.
  • Continual improvements using engineering excellence best practices.
  • Lead on solution design and discovery sessions on product backlog items.
  • Demos and knowledge transfers to stakeholders around product developments.
  • Spread your experience and knowledge to junior engineers.
  • Improve automated testing and deployments using CI/CD pipelines.
  • Optional opportunity to line manage junior engineers.
  • Continual learning through internal and external training.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • 1-3 years experience in designing & building data products from inception through to production.
  • Good core development skills in two or more of the following: Scala, Java, SQL, & Python.
  • Hands on software development in a story driven agile environment.
  • Can demonstrate software engineering best practices.
  • Use of at least one cloud platform, such as AWS, GCP, Azure or Private cloud.
  • Be proactive about continuous improvement and innovation.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Use of Hadoop, GCP or AWS to build Big Data solutions using some of the following technologies: Scala, Java, Python, Spark, Kafka, Kinesis, Kinesis Analytics, BigQuery, Dataflow, BigTable, SQL, Python.
  • Led on data product designs with other engineers to come up with the best solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with Continuous Integration and Deployment Strategies
  • Prior experience using Confluence, JIRA, or other Atlassian tools.
  • Software version control using git or SVN.
  • Presentation of technical issues and successes to other members of the team and to Product Owners.
  • Keen interest in learning new technologies and putting these into practice.
