About the job

Your opportunity

Exciting opportunity for a litigation and regulatory lawyer to join the Contentious Matters team within the firm’s Quality, Risk and Security community.

The Contentious Matters team is a team made up of lawyers, auditors and accountants, with responsibility for managing all UK contentious legal and risk matters. The team has a broad and demanding remit, which at its core is focused on regulatory enquiries, regulatory investigations, claims, threatened claims, circumstances that could lead to investigations or claims, public enquiries, reputational issues, complaints, and extensive requests for evidence.

Beyond that, the team’s role and purpose increasingly includes: a) supporting on contentious matters arising across our North South Europe community; b) ad hoc risk consultancy (in particular for our colleagues within both Consulting and Audit & Assurance); c) project work (focussed on a variety of legal and risk subjects, with a view to supporting our partners and people in pro-actively driving quality and the management of risk); d) QRS/Firm support, including providing legal advice in respect of internal and external transactions; and e) managing the firm’s PII arrangements.

This is an interesting, challenging and varied role. It is a rare opportunity to join an excellent team, which would provide the successful candidate with a unique insight into the firm, excellent experience in dealing with often high-profile legal and risk issues faced by the firm and exposure to the firm’s executive leadership.

The start date is as soon as possible.

Are you looking to return to the workplace after an extended career break?

For this role we can offer coaching and support designed for returners to refresh your knowledge and skills, and help your transition back into the workplace after a career break of 2 years or more. If this is relevant for you, just let your recruiter know when you make your application.

Your role

About the Contentious Matters team

You will be joining an in-house team of circa 15 professionals (a mixture of lawyers, accountants and auditors), reporting to the partner in charge of contentious matters. The team enjoys a high profile within the firm, with continuous access to leadership. You will have the opportunity to play a vital role in protecting Deloitte’s brand, reputation, people and resources.

As a litigation and regulatory lawyer, ideally (but not essentially) with experience of dealing with Regulators such as the FRC, ICAEW, FCA and SRA, you would be actively involved in all aspects of the team’s work (as set out above), and in particular you would be expected to:

  • Pro-actively help manage a demanding case load of contentious matters (independently where appropriate, but also with others in the team), with a focus on matters arising from our Audit & Assurance service line;
  • Work with (and coordinate) a variety of our internal stakeholders (including, amongst others, engagement teams, our partners and staff within the service line risk teams, others within the Deloitte legal and risk community (including senior leadership), and colleagues in our media and comms team);
  • Liaise confidently and independently with our external stakeholders (including in particular with our regulators, lawyers acting for third parties, as well as external legal counsel and experts);
  • Contribute positively to the team’s successes, and high profile, by having a personal impact that matters in all elements of the role (including by owning and developing legal and risk projects);
  • Take an active role in the management, support and training of more junior members within the team (and within the legal and risk community generally); and
  • Work effectively in a diverse environment within an inclusive team culture where people are recognised for their contribution.

Your work, your choice

At Deloitte we believe the best impact is the value we add, not the hours we sit at our desk. We carefully consider agile ways of working, both formal and informal, that allow for the best impact for our people and our clients. Please speak to your recruiter about the working pattern that works best for you.

Location: Preferably, but not essentially, London with occasional domestic travel.

Work pattern: This is a full time opportunity.

Your professional experience

  • PQE as a litigation and regulatory lawyer;
  • Experience of working both at a respected private practice law firm (ideally with good PII experience) and / or in-house (whether through secondments or otherwise);
  • Experience of audit contentious and regulatory matters, to include FRC and ICAEW examples;
  • A curious mind, with a passion for problem-solving and strong communication skills;
  • Good analytical skills and demonstrated ability to articulate advice in succinct and understandable manner, and to make recommendations based on analysis;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication and influencing skills;
  • Strong team player with good organisation, planning and project management skills;
  • Attention to detail and a consistent high level of quality;
  • Highly motivated, with a proven ability to work on your own initiative within a challenging work environment

Your service line: Quality, Risk and Security

The Quality, Risk and Security (QRS) community is an overarching identity for all of the professionals who manage quality and risk for Deloitte. It comprises: Deloitte Business Security (DBS), National Quality and Risk Management (NQRM), Quality & Risk Operations (QR Ops), and Service Line Quality and Risk Management teams (including Switzerland), and is led by a dedicated partner who sits on the firm’s Executive. Within QRS, we use our skills and experience across a variety of disciplines to support a risk intelligent culture at Deloitte; enabling our partners and practitioners to deliver high quality services to their clients, minimising the administrative burden on our people, and acting as custodians of firm risk, security, ethics and reputation.

Personal independence

Regulation and controls are standard practice in our industry and Deloitte is no exception. These controls provide important legal protection for both you and the firm. We are subject to a number of audit regulations, one of which requires that certain colleagues abide by specific personal independence constraints. This can mean that you and your “Immediate Family Members” are not permitted to hold certain financial interests (shares, funds, bonds etc.) with audit clients of the firm. The recruitment team will provide further detail as you progress through the recruitment process.
