The Team

The Export and Investment Policy Unit is a key DIT strategy team and works across the department, government and industry to develop policies to drive the UK’s export and investment performance and enhance the UK’s international competitiveness and prosperity.

We work closely with Ministers and DIT’s Directors-General, as well other government departments and operational teams in the UK and overseas.

We develop policy responses to trade and investment issues to remove barriers to exporting and investment.

Our work is dynamic, exciting and central to the Government’s growth agenda, and we aim to improve the development of policies with better evidence, a better understanding of the political context, and through better planning and engagement.

The Role

This is a high-profile role leading on exports policy and strategy which involves close working with teams and senior leaders within DG Exports and UK Trade, Ministers, business and other strategy teams within DIT and across Whitehall to ensure DIT’s export policy, strategy and leadership has the greatest impact. There is strong demand for our work from DIT Ministers, senior officials, No.10 and Cabinet Office.

The team led the drafting and publication of the Government’s Export Strategy, working very closely with teams across DIT and Whitehall as well as the business community. This is a great time to join as we are looking for a brilliant Grade 6 to build on that work help ensure the Strategy is a success beyond publication, and exports policy within the Department has real impact.

The Grade 6 will be part of the Senior Management Team alongside the Deputy Director and the Head of Investment Policy and Strategy.

Job Description

The successful candidate will lead the Exports side of the Policy Unit, which consists of four Grade 7s and four HEOs. They will:

  • Provide leadership for the team’s work on exports policy;
  • Develop and empower a high performing team, establishing a positive and collaborative working environment that encourages precise thinking and innovative solutions;
  • Deliver essential project work, while responding to important short-term demands;
  • Ensure DIT has a strong strategic relationship with UK Export Finance;
  • Ensure the team’s work is consistent with the Export Strategy;
  • Respond to Secretary of State, Ministerial and DG priorities; and
  • Contribute to the wider work of the directorate and the Department, including at a corporate level.

Hybrid working

The role will be based in either Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
