About the job

The Financial Accountant will provide support on the production of DIT’s financial accounts, relationship with the National Audit Office (NAO), and provide advice on risks around the Department’s financial controls.

We are looking for two driven and enthusiastic Financial Accountants to join us in the Financial Accounting and Control Team (FACT).

FACT plays a critical role within the Department’s Finance and Business Services Directorate with responsibility for ensuring compliance with financial standards and best practice, delivery of statutory reporting, oversight of key financial controls, VAT compliance, cash management. It is a high-profile team which also provides advice on the accounting, budgetary and tax implications of new projects and programmes.

The positions, which reports to a Senior Financial Accountant, will be exposed to all aspects of the Department’s financial accounting and reporting. The successful candidate will be expected to be flexible to take on varying roles in the team.

Job Description

  • Managing and quality assuring financial and non-financial information submissions, collected through the commissioning process at interim and year-end.
  • Collaborating and working with the wider finance community, and external Partner Organisations (i.e., Trade Remedies Authority) to mitigate accounting risks so that the Departmental Accounts are free of material errors.
  • Ensuring that all the technical aspects of the accounts production process are consistent with HM Treasury guidance and specifically the requirements of the Government Financial Reporting Manual (FReM).
  • Providing technical accounting advice under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and guidance to a variety of partners around the Department.
  • Where appropriate, collaborating closely with HM Treasury colleagues on technical issues and cross Whitehall accountancy issues.
  • Engaging with the external auditors, the National Audit Office (NAO) and Government Internal Audit as and when required.
  • Line Managing x 1 HEO/EO and supervising accounts production related tasks completed by colleagues.
  • Adhoc tasks e.g., propose improvements to finance processes and controls, implementation of sound financial controls, provide support on tax related matters, regular reconciliations, project work, preparation & review of month end journals, finance lead schedules, and financial accounts model etc.

Hybrid Working

The role will be based in either Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Essential Criteria

  • Fully qualified accountant – CCAB (e.g. ACCA, ACA, CIPFA or CIMA)
  • Strong technical accounting skills (e.g. ability to accurately create accounting journals, identify the audit evidence required to support a transaction, and IFRS application)
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Ability to work flexibly and respond positively to changing business needs

Desirable Criteria

  • Preparation or audit of Central Government/public sector set of accounts
