West Midlands

West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS FT serves a population of 5.6 million people covering an area of more than 5,000 square miles made up of Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Coventry, Birmingham and Black Country conurbation. The West Midlands is a hugely diverse area and covers the second largest urban area in the country (Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country) while over 80% of the area is rural. We are also the second most ethnically diverse region in the country after London. With approximately 7000 staff we serve the population from our 15 preparation hubs across the region, responding to around 4000 ‘999’ calls every day, as well as providing almost 1 million non-emergency patient journeys each year.

We are a fast paced and ambitious organisation, with a reputation for delivering high quality services, which includes being the UK’s only CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated ambulance service. As we continue to respond to the challenges and additional pressures placed on our service as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and look for ways to continuously improve the care we deliver to our patients an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced finance leader to join our Board of Directors. As the Director of Finance, you will have responsibility for the overall strategic and operational leadership of the Trust as a member of the unitary board, as well as specific responsibility for ensuring the Trust has robust financial management systems and an effective financial strategy. Your Executive Director portfolio will also include Estates, Fleet, IT and Stores & Supplies.

You bring financial leadership expertise that has been gained at a senior level within a similarly complex organisation. Given the vast geography we serve and therefore the complex – and evolving – commissioning environment, you will need a demonstrable track record of operating in a strategic role, working beyond traditional organisational boundaries, in a complex and political stakeholder environment. Most of all, you will share our values, be committed to developing a diverse and inclusive organisation and be focussed on continuous improvement and innovation as we strive to deliver outstanding excellence to the communities we serve.

For further information or for a confidential discussion about this fantastic opportunity please contact Carmel Bell, Michelle Shirley or Emma Pickup from GatenbySanderson on 07917 826639.

Closing date: 9am Monday 7 November
