The Role:

The Crowd are working with a design-led architectural studio based in East London who is looking to hire a Finance Manager to join their collaborative and friendly team. The studio has won several high-profile awards for its outstanding projects in housing, public buildings, and education.

You will be joining a business whose senior team are committed to reviewing and looking for ways to improve, to have a more meaningful and positive impact on society. You will be a key member of the team, working closely with the senior management and directors to help monitor and drive the business’s financial performance.

This is a great opportunity for you to have input and be influential in business decisions. The ideal person for this role will have previous experience working in a similar role in an SME within the built environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing the sales and purchase ledger functions including managing sub-consultant payments
  • Carrying out P&L and balance sheet reconciliations, including month-end processes
  • Managing the accounts receivable function, ensuring the timely collection of debt
  • Ensuring all transactions, revenue and expenditure, are properly accounted for in the correct periods and with accuracy
  • Managing the company expenses and credit card accounts
  • Monitoring practice bank accounts, managing income and expenditure, updating the cashflow schedule and reporting to the Directors as required
  • Producing payroll to gross pay for supply to the external payroll provider (with a view to eventually bringing the payroll function in-house) and ensuring PAYE is calculated and submitted to HMRC on time
  • Managing company pension, posting monthly contributions to provider, making adjustments as necessary and undertaking annual compliance review with provider
  • Ensuring quarterly VAT calculations are submitted to HMRC in an accurate and timely manner
  • Coordinating preparation of annual accounts and corporation tax with external accountants
  • Liaising with the senior team and external consultants to coordinate annual R+D tax relief submission
  • Reporting annually the practice’s Gender Pay Gap data
  • Monitoring project profitability through the company’s project planning software including checking that all live projects have accurate and current information logged.
  • Working with senior stakeholders on planning, forecasting and variance reporting, including putting together reports and visuals to aid business decision-making.
  • Providing accurate and reliable monthly and ad hoc reporting to management in a way that non-financial people can relate to and understand eg project profitability, actual v budget
  • Assisting with setting budget(s) for the year, in line with business strategy

Key Skills:

  • Experience working in a similar role within an SME with experience in both management and financial accounting with a commercial outlook
  • Part-qualified or fully qualified (CIMA, ACA, ACCA or similar)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including strong Excel skills and system oriented in your approach
  • Xero and CMAP experience an advantage
  • Ability to identify and implement process and system improvements
  • Analytical, methodical and accurate with the ability to deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines
  • Team player with good people management/communications skills and a “can do” attitude
