About the job

Wellcome is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate.

These challenges need the bold research our funding supports, but they won’t be solved by science alone. We are looking for an Insights and Learning Manager to manage and oversee a portfolio of projects that bring together, synthesise and translate insights and learning from our internal data insights and external learning to inform the design of programmes and initiatives that drive our EDI strategic goals

Wellcome’s Culture, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (CEDI) team is a diverse, ambitious and passionate team that oversees our bold set of actions and programmes as a way to drive to our Equity Diversity and Inclusion Strategy. The CEDI Insights and Learning team sits within CEDI, working to surface best practice, data insights and learning, mobilising these insights to inform CEDI’s programmes and initiatives.

This is an exciting time to be joining CEDI. We have a wealth of insights to inform our learning and as a newly expanded CEDI team, we are now mobilising our work to make progress on our strategy, including our Anti-Racism and Anti-Ableism work. The Insights and learning manager is a brand-new role, so you will have the chance to shape this role and shape how we support CEDI and wider colleagues to utilise insights to tell a compelling story of our impact.

We have access to a range of data insights and learning, generated either by our Data Insights team or from commissioned research and learning surfaced under Best Practice and Advising function. Examples include our internal staff diversity data, commissioned research into EDI practice applied to grant funding, and our recent evaluation report on progress on our anti racism commitments.

Drawing on your highly specialist technical skills and expertise in research design, human centred design and storytelling, you will partner with CEDI team members to make sense of what we are learning and support them in taking a holistic approach to driving change.

A creative thinker, team player and excellent communicator, you will apply a dynamic and iterative process that includes synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically-sound application of insights to achieve our EDI strategic goals.

In this role you will

  • Establish our approach to bringing together Insights and learning with an EDI lens to drive the delivery of CEDI initiatives, projects and programmes.
  • Manage and oversee a portfolio of projects that brings together insights and learning from across a range of sources to inform actionable next steps linked to CEDI strategic outcomes
  • Ensure that CEDI Insights and Learning are acted on by colleagues in the CEDI team and wider stakeholders including members of the Senior Leadership Team by helping them to understand, interpret and apply insights to inform our EDI programmes and initiatives, using a range of tools and approaches to bring the insights and actions to life
  • Commission deep dives and reviews, creating compelling requests for proposals for external agencies, suppliers and partners based on sound analysis and to achieve clear outcomes. Be accountable for understanding and interpreting insights to identify and prioritise EDI problems, as well as using insights as an EDI change catalyst
  • Be accountable for how we communicate what the data tells us to key senior stakeholders, with the aim it will evoke behaviour change, systems thinking, inclusive practice and people centred design to achieve Wellcome’s EDI goals.
  • Be responsible for the output of quality EDI data translation and action-oriented design. Work closely with the Data Insights team to identify gaps in our insights and identify opportunities for further insights gathering to help inform our work
  • Work closely with the CEDI Programme Manager, ensuring insights feed into project plans, communications plans, and tracking, ensuring work stream progress happens on time and to organisation-wide standards
  • Advocate for Wellcome and the EDI strategy from a storytelling, people centred and progressive thinking perspective by identifying opportunities to better show case and evidence the experiences of minoritised groups across Wellcome and external audiences
  • Be accountable for the quality of your own and your established expert groups outputs. Represent your area of work in internal meetings, such as conferences, board meetings, steering groups and networks
  • Contribute to the creation and development of a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

To Be Successful In This Role You Will Have

  • Experience in using insights from an analytics initiative to inform strategy and action planning, with knowledge of the analytics life cycle and the common pitfalls
  • Technical fluency and creativity in processing, interpreting, synthesising and translating quantitative and qualitative analytics for structured problem solving; Expertise in applying strategic design thinking techniques for the conceptual development of differentiated value propositions
  • Experience in communicating solution driven ideas using design techniques, including mock-ups, models, storytelling, journey mapping, system maps and/or infographics
  • Sounded and knowledgeable around deep trend analysis and how to apply this to projects and programmes; Able to understand the priorities and challenges of EDI Data and insights, and the context and narrative behind it
  • Applicable knowledge of project management methodologies and agile ways of working; Domain knowledge of the grant making and philanthropy sector and equity diversity and inclusion challenges that comes with how and we fund and how and who we employ
  • Strong competencies in the use of relevant technical tools, applications and software
