We are a Real Estate Tax team which focuses primarily on ‘Occupiers’ (i.e. trading business) and Owner Occupier ‘property rich’ businesses, across all UK market sectors (Listed, Inbound, Financial Services and Private Business. We are a Real Estate Tax team which focuses primarily on ‘Occupiers’ (i.e. trading business) and Owner Occupier ‘property rich’ businesses, across all UK market sectors (Listed, Inbound, Financial Services and Private Business. We provide real estate tax advice over a wide range of topics including:

  • Corporate tax
  • Indirect Tax (VAT)
  • Stamp taxes
  • Capital Allowances
  • Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)
  • Business Rates
  • Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED)

Our principle differentiation is our focus on being ‘key advisors’, helping Heads of Tax, Financial Directors and Chief Finance Officers (‘CFOs’), manage risk and achieve tax efficiencies in their transformation or property growth plans for their business. In addition, as part of PwC cross line of service “Real Asset” team, we regularly provide services as part of a combination of; Consulting, Deals, Accounting Advisory, Tax, and Legal on real estate matters. Within our team, our ‘peer group’ also networks closely and most of the teams will have connections at each grade (Manager, SM, Director etc).

This is a fast growth business area established 3 years ago, building from PwC’s existing teams in Real Estate Tax and Innovation and Capital Incentives (ICI) (Capital Allowances and R&D). We are on target to become a £3m Real Estate business in the next 2 years, giving plenty of room for promotions and growth of the team.

Based primarily in Embankment Place Office (EP) in London, however other locations and home bases are entirely flexible. The core team consists of 1x Director, 2x Senior Manager, x2 Managers and x2 Associates. However the wider network team features 30 tax professionals including 1x Partner, 6x Directors, 6x Senior Managers, and other Managers and Associates. This team brings together a number of different backgrounds and experiences including; accountants (ACA), tax advisors (CTA) and surveyors (MRICS), all focusing on Tax.

The role

This role is suited to a candidate who practises in real estate tax, looking to become a ‘key tax advisor’ on Real Estate tractions to Occupiers and Owner Occupier business, in almost all property sectors and many Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 businesses, in addition to private and PE backed business.

As a Manager within the team, you will work on a varied portfolio of clients across; Real Estate transactions, structuring, and overcoming expansion or re-origination challenges. Together with our existing team, you’ll be assisting Heads of Tax, Finance Directors and Chief Financial Officers manage risk and achieve tax efficiencies in their transformation or property growth plans for their business.

As a ‘key tax advisor’ your role will provide significant client contact with some of the firm’s largest clients, development opportunities (often with PwC Consulting, Accounting and Legal teams) through real time learning and working as part of a well established team.

The work

Whilst our work is different and challenging each day, we primarily focus on 3 areas of work:

Occupiers, Lease transactions and strategy – advising large occupiers on real estate tax issues, typically on leases acquisitions, disposals, surrenders, assignments and sub-letting. Tax areas include SDLT, VAT, Capital Allowances, Corporate Tax and CIS by working closely with the other specialists in our wider Real Estate Tax network.

Outside of lease transactions, clients will view us as the ‘primary’ contact for all real estate tax matters. You will play a key part in spotting opportunities, dealing with complex challenges and working closely with the network team to deliver high value advice to clients.

Common transactions include; Sale and Leasebacks, Ground Rent Structures, Surrenders and Regrants, and Lease Re-Gears.

Owner occupiers & property investors, deals and transaction advice – for our clients that own freehold or long leasehold property (for investment purposes or business purposes), assisting in a variety of deals and tax structuring workstream with a UK focus. This also includes supporting, on occasion, PwC dedicated deals teams on Real Estate matters, including M&A deals tax and Real Estate Deals Tax.

Common transactions include: Tax Due Diligence (‘DD’) on property rich entities, real estate structuring, deals support (including working with legal, accounting and consulting teams) to achieve tax efficient structures.

Follow up work – Huge variety of work, from capital allowances analysis on acquisitions, disposals, and large refurbishments and improvement projects, to helping and delivering projects with our colleagues in the wider Real Estate Leasing network.

Essential Skills And Experience

You will have 5+ years of experience in tax background:

  • Deals tax (either Real Estate or M&A)
  • Real estate tax generalist
  • Real estate focuses of experience in any of the following; Corporate Tax, VAT, or Stamp Tax (with a mindset of expanding horizons)
  • Otherwise; large corporate tax, tax compliance, or tax accounting backgrounds also desirable.

An interest in property is essential in every case.

The role is suitable for someone looking for a technical or commercial leadership role (or somewhere in-between). A friendly and collaborative approach to new challenges would also help to fit in with the existing driven, diverse, and talented team.

You will either be a chartered accountant (ACA or similar), tax advisor (CTA or similar), or surveyor (MRICS) with tax experience.
