Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a newly formed team that will drive the delivery and development of a new SharePoint-based intranet from the very start. This role is about helping our 65,000 colleagues find out what they need to know, and do what they need to do, as simply and as quickly as possible.

The multi-disciplinary team will be focused on product management, content management, and managing and engaging with a new community of content creators who are based across the organisation and responsible for creating and updating their own content.

Working with the team’s Content Editors, Community Lead, Development Managers, and relevant stakeholders you will create smooth and effective end to end user journeys, using evidence, data and research to make content decisions. You’ll be a passionate advocate for clear, jargon-free content and be persuasive and collaborative with a wide range of stakeholders.

Person specification

As the Content Designer, you will:

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to identify user needs, map user stories, design content plans, and agree the right design approach
  • Engage with users in meaningful ways to identify user needs and collate evidence of how content can be improved
  • Make sure user journeys are the best they can be, using user research and analytics
  • Follow content techniques as they emerge in web trends and make a case for them being introduced to the intranet’s content approach where appropriate
  • Choose the best format for displaying information to the user while ensuring content is accurate and meets user needs
  • Develop and maintain relationships with content creators and subject experts, helping them to solve content issues, and ensuring smooth user journeys.
  • Monitor the performance of content and identify ways to improve it by using analytics, user feedback, insight and user research
  • To act as an adviser on best practice in content design and share your expertise as part of our training offer for the content community.

You will also be expected to:

  • Actively participate in the HMRC and cross-government design communities, both digitally and face-to-face
  • Proactively seek new learning opportunities and look to continually improve by gaining feedback from your peers and the business.

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrable evidence of using metrics and user feedback to define and refine website or intranet content, with substantial experience in a user-centred content design role.
  • Robust experience of writing, editing, and publishing digital content with experience of using content management systems and content production processes to publish content.
  • Experience of talking about your design decisions and approach to stakeholders of various levels, to help them understand that user needs, and a user-centred approach are the right way to design content.
  • A systematic and analytical approach to problem solving with the ability to managing competing priorities
  • An applied understanding of government accessibility requirements and able to design content that works with common assistive technologies.
  • Ability to balance competing demands and take a pragmatic approach when making decisions and recommendations

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge and experience of the Microsoft 365 suite, particularly SharePoint.
  • Awareness and understanding of Agile methodology and experience of applying an Agile mindset to your work.
  • Experience of contributing to Content Management Strategy design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of best practice for accessibility, including relevant legislation including Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 and the Equality Act 2010
