We are looking for an experienced interaction design leader to ensure that our interaction design approaches are developed, championed and delivered and we continue to make HMRC a great place for interaction designers to work.

Job Description

You will shape and lead the vision and strategy for the interaction design profession within HMRC and lead the development of interaction design as an approach and capability at HMRC by:

  • setting recruitment standards to help ensure we bring in great people with the right skills
  • creating and building a strong interaction design community
  • getting them the tools they need to do the work
  • procuring, developing or gaining access to profession related training
  • ensuring our stakeholders know what to expect from the profession and when they should be looking to engage
  • doing the strategic thinking, in collaboration with other profession leaders, on the future direction for the interaction design profession within HMRC

Person specification

As the Head of Interaction Design, you will report to the Deputy Director, Product and User-Centred Design. You will:

  • collaborate with key partners the Head of Service Design, Head of Content Design and Head of User Research to provide vision and leadership across the user-centred design professions
  • plan and lead discussions at a senior level to build understanding and support for interaction design as a way to help meet strategic goals
  • build interaction design capability across a range of contexts and delivery environments
  • work with lead designers to establish and support a diverse and thriving community across the department
  • support the progression/maturing of our ‘Design resources for HMRC’ including styles, components, patterns and standards
  • be an active leader in the cross-government interaction design community, owning strategic relationships including with the Government Digital Service and Central Digital and Data Office

You Will Already Have Significant Experience In

  • successfully communicating the value of user-centred interaction design to a wide variety of audiences, including senior leaders
  • setting direction; making decisions and evaluating impact
  • contributing to the strategy and aspirations of large organisations
  • creating collaborative, resilient and inclusive working environments where individuals are encouraged to fulfil their potential
  • reviewing the work of others, coaching and developing staff and managing overall quality and standard of work
  • line-managing designers

Technical Skills

You must be able to demonstrate the following technical skills from the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Capability Framework, as you will be assessed against them during the selection process:

  • Strategic thinking
  • User focus
  • Evidence and context-based design
  • Communication skills
  • Stakeholder relationship management

Desirable skills and experience

  • experience working with the Service Manual and GOV.UK standards and working practices
  • familiarity with the GOV.UK design system

Team members that are moving offices as a result of the Locations Programme will be entitled to a Moves Adjustment Payment for three years where they incur additional costs. In addition, there will also be a small number of specialist sites where the work cannot be done anywhere else, in Gartcosh (near Glasgow), Telford, Ipswich, Worthing and Dover, as well as our headquarters in central London. What’s more, our Welsh language service has people located in Porthmadog, as well as Cardiff.

Terms and Conditions

If you’re successful you need to know that in February 2021 members of recognised trade unions (ARC and PCS) voted to approve a pay and contract reform offer. This means that HMRC will adopt new terms and conditions for all colleagues as part of a multi-year pay deal and contract offer, the pay deal period is 01 June 2020 – 31 st May 2023 and terms and conditions changes take place from the 01 June 2021 onwards. These terms will apply to colleagues who already work in HMRC and if you join us, it will apply to you too.
