About The Team

Energy, Environment and Agriculture Team

We advance HM Treasury’s interests across the full range of domestic energy, environment, and agriculture policy issues! We deal with some of the biggest policy opportunities and challenges facing the UK including creating a 21st century fully decarbonised energy system, implementing England’s agricultural transition plan and reforming our environment policy – where the recently enacted Environment Act 2021 will set statutory targets for the recovery of the natural world.

We

The Defra Spending Branch, within which this role sits, has spending control responsibility for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and advises the Chancellor and HMT Ministers on all areas of policy within Defra’s remit, and that of its arms-length bodies.

  • advise on the protection of the natural environment, forestry, agriculture and land use change, food policy and animal health and welfare.
  • lead on climate risk and adaptation, flood and coastal erosion, water regulation and infrastructure, fishing and trade borders.
  • work closely with tax, spending, economics, fiscal and trade teams to ensure environmental considerations are embedded into financial and economic decision making
  • collaborate with international colleagues to ensure coherence with global action on nature.

Key Accountabilities

This is a high-profile role offering an excellent opportunity to work across a breadth of policy and spending issues.

This role sits within the spending branch of the Defra spending team. You will support our oversight of Defra’s c.£7 billion per annum budget, helping to ensure Defra live within the settlements agreed at Spending Review 21 and advising the Chancellor and Chief Secretary on emerging in-year issues. You will work collaboratively to build networks across HMT as well as develop positive relationships with Defra to find common positions and broker agreements.
