Are you interested in playing an important role in a key government Department that offers an exciting opportunity to be involved in the decision making that affects the whole of the UK? We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Green Finance Unit.

The Green Finance Unit is an impactful and friendly team working on a key sector to the government’s vision for the future of finance. We lead on policy and regulation for sustainable finance, ensuring the UK’s finance sector can respond to the challenge of climate change.

This is an exciting leadership role, heading a team to set and deliver the government’s strategy for the UK’s green and sustainable finance sector. The role sits at the heart of the UK’s efforts to stay at the front of the pack in this growing sector, and facilitate the huge investment needed to bring about the transition to net zero.

You will be responsible for the government’s overall domestic strategy for green and sustainable finance. This will include policy on sustainability disclosures, helping define what counts as a sustainable activity or investment, transition planning and tackling greenwashing (where firms make unsubstantiated green claims)

You will need to build effective working relationships across HM Treasury as you provide the link between the green and sustainable finance sector and broader government priorities for a globally competitive financial services sector. This will include working closely with the UK’s financial regulators (the Financial Conduct Authority and the Bank of England), other government departments, and the industry to develop the joined-up policies that will make the UK the preeminent destination to raise and invest green and sustainable finance.

What you will bring to the team:

The post is ideally suited to individuals with proven experience in policy making, setting strategic direction and stakeholder handling, and who wish to further develop these skills in this stretching role. Whilst knowledge and experience of the sustainable finance sector would be an advantage, it is not a pre-requisite for the role.

HM Treasury is proud of a diverse and inclusive work environment, committed to fairness and the promotion of equality of opportunity for all. We know that having a range of experiences, ways of working and thinking makes us a stronger organisation, better at developing policy that is reflective of the communities we serve. We embrace different views and experiences and value the fresh perspective that people from a variety of circumstances bring to the work we do. We welcome applications from candidates who have not previously worked for the Civil Service, mid- and late-career changers with transferrable skills, people from all backgrounds and circumstances regardless of disability, ethnicity, LGBT+ identity and socio-economic status.

Some of the Benefits our people love!

  • 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), plus 8 public holidays and the King’s birthday (unless you have a legacy arrangement as an existing Civil Servant). Additionally, we operate flexitime systems, allowing employees to take up to an additional 2 days off each month
  • Flexible working patterns (part-time, job-share, condensed hours)
  • Generous parental and adoption leave packages
  • Access to a generous Defined Benefit pension scheme with employer contributions.
  • Access to a cycle-to-work salary sacrifice scheme and season ticket advances
  • A range of active staff networks, based around interests (e.g. analysts, music society, sports and social club) and diversity (e.g. women in the Treasury, ethnic minority network, LGBT* network, faith and belief network)
