Job Responsibilities:

  • To codify the law, eliminate anomalies, repeal obsolete and unnecessary enactments and reduce the number of separate statutes
  • To ensure that the law is as fair, modern, simple and as cost-effective as possible
  • To conduct research and consultations in order to make recommendations for reform for consideration by Parliament
  • Supporting the Business Manager and HR Lead with HR and recruitment processes, in particular, with the annual research assistant recruitment campaig
  • Sending meeting invites, preparing papers and managing logistics for the monthly Peer Review and Board meetings
  • Updating and maintaining records to ensure information remains accurate, for example: the Freedom of Information log, records of staff arrivals and departures, the IT matrix, organisational charts, the HR dashboard etc.
  • Supporting the annual research assistant induction process, ensuring logistical arrangements are in place to help research assistants settle into their new roles
  • Supporting the Head of Communications and Communications Assistant with the Law Commission’s intranet presence, ensuring it is up to date and relevant
  • Supporting the Commission’s knowledge management structures, including use of SharePoint
  • Ensuring corporate responsibilities are met, for example, acting as the Commission’s display screen equipment assessor and fire warden
  • Providing general administrative support to the Corporate Services Team and wider Commission, including organising meetings, completing IT orders, answering the main Law Commission enquiries telephone line and managing emails received into a number of inboxes, such as the enquiries, recruitment, and Freedom of Information inboxes
  • Acting as the first point of contact for all general and IT queries from staff

Qualification & Experience:

  • Good IT skills and general IT knowledge
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build confidence and trust both internally and externally
  • Ability to use initiative and work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work flexibly across a number of different disciplines
  • Ability to prioritise workload with minimal supervision
  • Experience using Microsoft applications such as: Excel, Outlook and SharePoint
  • Creative approach to problem solving and improving processes
