Brief Description

We’re looking for a Senior Finance Business Partner to work as an integral member of supported business senior leadership team, to proactively identify, plan and meet the finance needs of the business in order to improve business performance, in coordination with members of the wider finance team. You’ll positively challenge Senior Leaders, budgets and business activities to enable the best business outcomes are delivered.

This role focusses on efficiencies elicitation and assurance and involves liaising with a large number of stakeholders. This is an area of huge importance to Network Rail – and the rail industry as a whole – and directly contributes to the business having sufficient funding to deliver planned work.

This role will be responsible for leading the analysis, assurance, and provision of advice and information to internal stakeholders and senior managers, in respect of Efficiency reporting in Anglia route (across both capex and opex).

The successful candidate will need to be comfortable operating across a range of areas simultaneously – assurance of data and initiatives, assistance with validation and evidencing, development of new initiatives, reporting, and process improvement.

About The Role (External)

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Consolidate, review and provide advice and guidance on periodic financial results and forecasts to identify and supervise risks, opportunities and efficiencies to minimise the financial and legal impact.
  • Provide recommendations on accounting guidelines and standards to ensure compliancy.
  • Provide oversight of the periodic accounts, relevant analysis and preparation of business plans and budgets to make financial decisions.
  • Develop, understand and influence the cost and income drivers to deliver the yearly business plan and lead the overall settlement.
  • Influence, mentor and challenge senior budget holders in understanding the impact of their period results and forecasts against budgets to run their business more effectively and manage within budgeting limits.
  • Proactively challenge budget holders plans and budget submissions to understand the overall plan, providing advice and initiatives to save costs and be more efficient as an organisation.
  • Drive, adapt and deliver results for the function, highlighting any issues and trends with financial and other business results to aid decision makers to make efficiencies.
  • Lead in budget holder meetings on performance to provide financial mentorship to drive business decisions, minimise risk and deliver good corporate governance.
  • Develop, drive and implement investment decisions and new business activities, working collaboratively with senior leaders to explore new opportunities and drive business performance.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • Membership of a relevant accounting body (CIMA/ACCA/ICAEW)
  • Excellent partner engagement and communication skills at all levels
  • Successful proven experience working in a sophisticated financial environment including; handling business risks, professional financial control and forward planning
  • Consistent record of budget management, governance and ability to understand and interpret commercial and financial landscapes (budgets, forecasts, actual status)
  • Significant experience in running ambiguity in a financial environment with strong evaluation and decision-making skills
  • Experience in large capital project accounting experience and understanding of project management principles
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject area, for example accounting and finance, business management or equivalent proven experience in finance

It’s not essential, but we’d love it if you have:

  • Experience of Oracle based systems
  • Relevant experience within multiple finance fields
  • Knowledge and technical expertise of Government accounting and relevant financial governance
