About The Role (External)

Who are we looking for?

This role represents an amazing opportunity to begin a career in the rail industry.

It is a key entry role to our company and industry.

The role provides comprehensive administrative support to the Strategy & Planning Director and their team. More than that we will provide you the opportunity work with team members working on HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail, so you can develop the skills that a future career in the rail industry needs. Previous post holders have all moved into more senior roles in Network rail.

What does the average day look like?

We are looking for a positive and enthusiastic person to support the Strategy and Planning team. This is a varied and challenging role that will offer stretch and opportunity for the successful person.

We are looking for someone who is well organised, has excellent written and verbal skills, is able to multitask and is able to work effectively in a team. You will also have a desire to learn and develop new skills.

What essential skills and experiences are required?

  • Support the Strategy & Planning team through co-ordination of administrative activities and tasks.
  • Conduct information/data gathering and manage the creation, version and change control of a portfolio of strategic planning documents.
  • Provide colleagues with technical and administrative support on the development of strategic policy.
  • Contribute to the review of new franchise specifications and revised franchise requirements through data collation and distribution.
  • Undertake general office administration duties including control of all mail, co-ordinating diaries, processing and maintaining personnel records including vulnerable assets such as mobile telephones; make necessary returns.
  • Utilise financial and procurement systems and act as Local Purchasing Agent (where directed) by ordering stationary and other office consumables and arranging travel, hotels and vehicles as required.
  • Organise meetings and the production, collation, and dissemination of documentation for and resulting from them. Take minutes when required and follow up actions from the meeting.
  • Maintain an efficient filing system paying particular attention to records of standing meetings, statutory records, and authorisations.
  • Maintain policies for third parties (i.e., community rail) such that they remain up to date for changes in the industry and wider environment.
  • Participate and attend meetings on behalf of the Director (North) where applicable .

Essential

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi task and prioritise activities effectively to meet demanding and changing deadlines
  • Competent in use of IT packages including Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Experience of producing media and publications
  • Strong organisation and time management skills
  • Knowledge and experience of records management
  • Experience of providing support to teams within a corporate environment

Desirable

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills
  • Good understanding of the context of central, regional and local rail planning in Great Britain
