Brief Description

We are looking for a Commercial Manager to join our team here in Derby, working across our portfolio of capital delivery projects on the Midland Main Line.Our projects cover enhancements and renewals across various disciplines – enabling works, civils, electrification, route clearance and signalling & telecoms.Our schemes are in various stages of development too, from optioneering and outline design, through detailed design & build to close out so there’s a breadth of experience to be gained.

Based in Derby and only a stone’s throw from the Peak District, with great rail connections to the rest of the country and with flexible/hybrid working arrangements available, this is a fantastic opportunity to join a supportive team, develop your career in commercial management and support the UK government’s national decarbonisation strategy.

Key Accountabilities

About the role (External)

Our new Commercial Manager will be responsible for the full suite of commercial management activity including:-

  • managing, monitoring and reporting on all commercial aspects of their projects.
  • manage compliance with Network Rail’s Corporate Governance rules and lead cost reporting of their projects.
  • undertaking the commercial review and valuation of contractor applications in accordance with Network Rail processes, contractual terms & conditions and commensurate with contractual entitlement.
  • providing proactive advice to the wider team on all change, including proposed scope changes, in accordance with Network Rail change control systems.
  • recommend mitigating action on all commercial risk/claim events at the earliest possible time to the allocated projects and programmes.
  • Supporting negotiations of final account settlements to enable close out as per the project authority, project plan and within agreed timescales.
  • provide support in the pre-contract procurement of suppliers/main contractors.
  • Happy to work both independently and as part of the wider team, the role will be feeding into the Senior Commercial Manager for the project as well as providing guidance and direction to the Assistant Commercial Manager

Essential

It’s great if you can demonstrate:

  • Experience in commercially managing investment projects
  • A good understanding of railway and construction industry forms of contract
  • Good understanding of the construction/railway industry
  • Skills in initiating and building positive working relationships with customers, their team and stakeholders.
  • Experience of being output driven, prioritising work to deliver on time and taking ownership in their role
  • An ability to make timely decisions and to think ahead
  • You are dependable and co-operative, able to align to a vision, focus on objectives and deliver great outcomes with confidence
  • You are an adaptable, innovative person willing to challenge our ways of working and conventional delivery mechanisms and processes to make the project a success
  • You have experience of multi-disciplinary project environments
  • A passion for personal growth, sharing best practice, sustainability and a drive for improving safety and compliance within the rail industry

Desirable

  • Membership of a professional body is desirable but not essential, as is education to degree standard or equivalent
