Network Rails Design Delivery (NRDD) Geotechnical & Drainage team works across all Regions of Network Rail on a broad range of projects from early stage design development through to detailed design, site supervision & verification of construction works. The team provides support for emergency and reactive projects and work in a highly collaborative manner with clients and delivery teams.

The types of projects the team deliver include rainfall catchment analysis & drainage system design and scour assessments as well as supporting on ground investigations, various cross discipline designs and assessment related to drainage.

Main Responsibility

What will you be doing?

A typical week can be highly varied and involve office-based design activity from Desk Studies to detailed software analysis, stakeholder engagement, engagement with suppliers, site based activity including supervision of investigations, supervision of construction activities, assessment of existing earthworks and structures.

The team undertake work on single and also multi-disciplinary projects working alongside our NRDD colleagues in Track, Signalling, Civils & Structures, Buildings & Architecture and M&E teams on complex and challenging regional and national projects to deliver innovative and award winning projects and delivering efficiencies and improved risk management. The team comprises Drainage Engineers and Civil Engineers working closely with Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists. Professional development leading to Chartered status is encouraged and actively supported within the team complimented by targeted training and coaching to support staff achieve their goals.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and supportive team member with the skills to lead by example, critically evaluate the work done by others, and clearly communicate technical detail to both a technical and non-technical audience.

In this role you will need technical expertise and experience in assessing risks and solutions related to drainage design & drainage activities, with particular reference to the railway environment. Any previous experience of undertaking and managing desk studies, design, procuring & supervising drainage survey (non-intrusive and intrusive); producing and checking of drainage design Reports in accordance with the requirements of relevant standard and best practices is advantageous. You will typically have experience of catchment analysis, hydraulic design, pumping system design, legislative requirement for water/wastewater, culvert design and assessment.

It would also be great if you have working knowledge of railway standards, Eurocode and UK annex design codes, British Standard, drainage investigation in addition to construction contracts and specifications. Familiarity and an ability to interrogate drainage software for the design of civil engineering projects would also be advantageous. This is in addition to experience in managing large datasets and also utilising GIS and CAD would be beneficial.

The Ideal Candidate

  • An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.
  • A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
  • Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
  • An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
  • An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
  • CDM, Risk Assessment competency.
  • Experience in design, construction and maintenance.
  • Competent to act as/working toward the competency of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE)
  • Experience in working and communicating with 3 rd party suppliers/contractors.

Also, it would great if you could have

  • Membership or working towards membership of an appropriate professional institution (e.g. ICE, CIWEM etc).
  • A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.
  • Basic Project Management Skills.
  • Strong Interpersonal and team working skills.
  • Broad knowledge of H&S legislation.
  • Understanding of Environmental Requirements of Drainage schemes.
  • Basic knowledge of Quality Management.
  • Competent in exercising the Designer’s obligations of CDM.
  • Assist with training and mentoring of junior engineers and trainees

Band & Salary: Band 4C – (£41,711 – £46,925)
