Job Description

Working in Digital Publishing at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as a Lead Software Engineer means you will play a pivotal role in transforming the way we deliver statistics to our customers through the adoption of leading-edge technologies and working practices to build world class solutions. You will lead a team of engineers and be responsible for all technical aspects of the product, including development, security, maintenance, and operations.

Working with Product Owners, you will have the opportunity to shape the product roadmap, and help set the technical direction as we modernise the delivery of statistics. You will also lead and facilitate technical discussions with software engineers and other stakeholders ensuring system and service designs align with our technical strategy and meet the needs of our users.

Responsibilities

As a Lead Engineer you will Contribute to the community, providing technical leadership, coaching, and mentoring the team, promoting knowledge sharing and adoption of good practice. Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Identify security risks and technical debt which affect the products we build, working with the service owner, product owners, and product teams to prioritise, design and implement improvements.
  • Act as a champion for agile practice and contribute to the development of a cutting-edge CI/CD and DevSecOps practice
  • Contribute to the community, providing technical leadership, coaching, and mentoring the team, promoting knowledge sharing and adoption of good practice.
  • Empower the software engineers to take responsibility for culture, standards, and technical aspects of the products themselves.
  • Ensure we have the right people and skills to meet the team’s goals by taking ownership of the technical recruitment process and leading on interviews. You will also have a voice in determining the roles we seek to recruit. 

We work across multiple business areas, software tools and systems and use a range of programming languages, including Go and Java.

We Also Utilise Technologies And Platforms Such As

  • AWS with Terraform, Ansible and Kafka,
  • Hashicorp stack including Nomad and Docker,
  • Data Storage technologies including MongoDB, and AWS Neptune,
  • Build and deployment tools including Jenkins and Concourse CI.

We expect that you will have experience of using some of these technologies and be keen to learn others.

Essential Criteria

  • Able to bring people together to form a motivated team. Understand how to empower delivery teams and to help create the right environment for a team to work in.
  • Be skilled and enjoy coaching and developing engineers’ skills in modern development standards and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, autonomous and user-centred agile environment.
  • Skilled in software engineering with an understanding of back end, front end and platform engineering. You are likely to have strong skills in at least one of those areas
  • Can apply industry best practice security standards and specifications to design, create, test and document software solutions with security controls embedded, specifically engineered as mitigation against security threats
  • Able to analyse current software development and delivery processes, then identify and implement opportunities to optimise them
  • Can set team-based standards for programming tools and techniques. Lead code reviews and give constructive feedback to others
  • Able to design, implement and execute a wide range of functional and non-functional testing techniques.
