About the job

Defence People Armed Forces Remuneration (AF Rem) is a division in the Chief of Defence People’s (CDP) organisation responsible for developing significant new remuneration policies and programmes relating to all military personnel. Today’s Military workforce has expectations and aspirations about careers that mirror the rest of society. Our task is to influence and communicate an ‘offer’ that is good enough to attract individuals to join and stay in the Armed Forces, whilst making sure that we make best use of taxpayer’s money. The AF Rem team works in an integrated way with the single Service Pay Colonels who are co-located with the team in Head Office.

The Armed Forces Pay team owns the Tri-Service (Army/Navy/RAF) pay policies which govern over £6Bn of spend per year, and is responsible for managing the annual Armed Forces pay round with the Armed Forces’ Pay Review Body (AFPRB), who provides strategic direction and advocacy for the Armed Forces as a public sector workforce without union representation. As part of this, on behalf of the MOD, the team submits extensive evidence each year to the independent AFPRB and Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB) to enable them to provide recommendations to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Defence on the pay and charges for military personnel.

Whether you’re already a policy officer seeking a new challenge or have ambitions of becoming one, this role will provide challenges and opportunities in equal measure. Working in Defence is unique both in scope and complexity – there is no other government department like us.
