Job Description:

To shape and embed sustainable and net zero carbon approaches across Yorkshire Water and its supply chains in order to manage priority short- and long-term opportunities and risks so that we can guarantee our essential water and wastewater services for the long term, at an affordable cost to customers. Working with the Manager of Net Zero Carbon, this role will drive the business to be a leader in carbon management that achieves its bold commitments to reduce carbon emissions and deliver net zero operational carbon by 2030.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Be the technical secretary to Yorkshire Water’s operational carbon working group to facilitate and drive the business to achieve our carbon commitments and continually mature our approach to measuring, reporting and managing all forms of our carbon emissions and those associated with our supply and value chain.
  • Provide high-quality carbon data for use in external publications, including reports for regulators and investors, based on Yorkshire Water’s Carbon Accounting Workbook, the standard water industry tool for carbon reporting.
  • Work with the Manager of Net Zero Carbon to provide expertise on carbon and communicate this expertise to drive progress across the business. This will include:
  • Maintaining and growing the understanding of our operational and capital carbon footprints, forecast scenarios; risks and opportunities; external best practice; and relevant national and international policy developments.
  • Developing our detailed plans to reduce emissions and meet our carbon commitments.
  • Working with and supporting colleagues in the business who undertake existing ‘business as usual’ carbon accounting and modelling.
  •  This will involve working with colleagues across the business who will own specific elements of the requirements of any standard, including, for example, supporting procurement colleagues to influence our supply chain and the Integrated Management Systems (IMS) Team who will facilitate the construction of any IMS-style systems associated with such standards.
  • Continually develop knowledge to be a company expert on sustainability best practice, legislation and science, especially carbon management.
  • Use this knowledge to provide specialist advice, activities and to raise awareness to drive business performance.
  • Lead, support and influence projects, strategies, policies, procedures, processes, training and communications to develop best practice sustainability, risk management and commercial opportunities across Yorkshire Water and its supply chains.
  • Support the Company’s sustainability agenda in other activities as required.
  • Collaborating with regional and national networks to share our work, learn from latest developments and shape the water industry approach to carbon management.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate the Company’s high level carbon policy, strategy and objectives/targets to help achieve our goal of reaching net zero by 2030.
  • This will align with activities led by others, such as the Quality and Environmental Policy, Energy Strategy, Asset Management Policy and Strategy, and more specific carbon strategies.
  • Lead and support the business to obtain and maintain compliance with carbon standards and frameworks such as PAS2080, ISO14064-1 and PAS2060

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience of working with the UK water industry Carbon Accounting Workbook (CAW)
  • Knowledge and experience in the wider water industry.
  • Substantial expertise and experience in leading, supporting and influencing carbon management and accounting activities.
  • Knowledge and experience of carbon accounting standards such as ISO14064-1
  • Strong written and verbal presentation skills, with proven ability to produce and communicate presentations, reports and publications on technical sustainability matters in ways which are accessible to different audiences.
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • Knowledge and experience managing and improving sustainability matters relevant to the water industry.
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Experience of engaging and influencing colleagues at all levels of authority.
  • Experience of analysing data and apply findings, for example to make the case for change.
  • Experience of leading, supporting and influencing sustainability assessments, projects and/or strategies to drive best practice and ensure legal compliance.
  • Passionate about sustainability; committed to driving change for the better; innovative and resilient in the face of obstacles; and open to being challenged and ready to constructively challenge others.
  • Knowledge of sustainability legislation, management issues and best practices.
